On 17 August 2017, approximately 200 Kaimyoin believers departed for Head Temple, Taisekiji, to attend the 20th Overseas Believers August Summer Study Tozan.
This was the largest group of overseas believers gathering at Taisekiji for the summer study course – with 2500 overseas believers from around 52 countries, supported by Japanese Hokkeko believers.
Everyone arrived at the Head Temple in high spirits; as the weather and environment supported our journey with the clouds providing some shade from the summer heat in Japan.
After attending the Gokaihi Ceremony to repay our debts of gratitude to the three treasures. Believers were treated to an exhibit on the five-storey pagoda at the Treasure Hall. With that Day 1 ended. The next day we woke up at 1 am to participate in Ushitora Gongyo together with High Priest.
During this tozan, we were privileged to have an audience with the High Priest, where He gave an important guidance on faith as the essential point of our practice. Believers were also able to make toba offerings for the deceased at the Kyakuden during this general Summer Study Meeting.
Our believers learnt the significance of the five-storey pagoda, and the sincere gokuyo efforts and spirit that of the pioneer believers had. The single-minded devotion and unity between priesthood and laity through the years made the construction of the five-storey pagoda possible.
It was also a momentous occasion for Singapore believers, with an invitation from the Overseas Department to perform the ukulele at this Summer Study Tozan.
Forty representatives from Kaimyo-in performed two songs – United for 2021 and 月亮代表我的心 (translated as “The Moon Represents My Heart”) at the closing ceremony. The resounding applause from the audience resonated with the vibrant energy to move forward in our respective countries’ kosen-rufu movement towards 2021.
After departing Taisekiji, we visited various sites such as the Tatsunokuchi persecution site, making the long climb up where Nichiren Daishonin first chanted Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo and sightings of the tai fish. We were also fortunate to have stayed at a hotel located near the Daishonin’s birthplace.
Despite the large group and varying ages of the believers, from 5 to 80 years old; everyone supported one another throughout the journey, with smiles, high spirit, forging new bonds and renewed determination in our faith and practice! This was truly a significant and memorable tozan for all of us.
